The best time to visit Petra.
Updated October 2026
The best months to visit Petra are March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and the nights cool. Summer is hot but manageable if you start at 6 am. Winter is quiet and clear, with cold nights and the occasional day of rain that can close the Siq.
Season by season
| Months | Weather | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | Warm days, cool nights | The best weather; busiest months. Book early. |
| June to August | Hot, dry days | Start at opening, rest at midday. Fewer groups. |
| September to November | Warm, settling to mild | Excellent; October is a favourite. |
| December to February | Cool days, cold nights | Quiet, clear light; occasional rain or snow. |
Spring
From March to May the hills turn briefly green, wildflowers grow between the rocks, and the days are made for walking. This is also when Petra is busiest, especially around Easter. Book your room early and be at the gate at opening.
Summer
June to August is hot in the open parts of the site, though Wadi Musa’s altitude of around a thousand metres keeps the nights pleasant. The trick is timing: be in the Siq at 6, do the Monastery climb before noon, spend the afternoon by the pool or in the hammam, and go back in the late afternoon light.
Autumn
September to November is many locals’ favourite: still warm, the light softer, the crowds lighter than spring. October has some of the most comfortable walking weather of the year.
Winter
December to February is quiet. Days can be bright and crisp, nights near freezing, and there are a few days of rain. Heavy rain can cause flash floods, and the Siq is closed for safety when they are expected, usually for a day. Pack a warm layer; hotel rooms here have heating.
The best time of day
Whatever the month, the first two hours after opening are the best: the Siq in its first light, the Treasury in cool shade, and the site before the day-trip coaches from Amman and the cruise passengers from Aqaba arrive in mid-morning. Stay near the gate and you can be first in.
Ramadan and holidays
During Ramadan, Petra stays open and is often quieter; some restaurants in town open only after sunset. Jordanian holidays such as Eid bring local visitors and families to Petra and Wadi Musa, and hotels fill up, so book ahead.
